Current statement from Google:
A few weeks ago – at the end of July 2015 (July 30, 2015), John Müller from Google answered an SEO's question in a Webmaster Hangout about whether social signals are important for optimization. He answered with a resounding NO.

It's always good to have multiple traffic sources.
